GREEN HYDROGEN STANDARDS

In the future, Jordan will play a significant role in producing green #hydrogen and exporting it abroad.

The goal of moving toward green hydrogen in energy production is primarily to reduce carbon dioxide #emissions, which have become one of the era's most serious problems.

As a result, hydrogen producers must ensure that all stages of the hydrogen production process are achieving this goal before beginning to implement these projects.

Governments’ role to ensure this is by enacting legislation that governs hydrogen #producers.

But how will the hydrogen #consumers, whether local or international, ensure transparency around the environmental impact of the hydrogen they use?

From here came the importance of having a Green Hydrogen Standard. It is an agreed international standard that outlines specific requirements that must be met in order for hydrogen production projects to be accredited and certified. These requirements are:

  • Stakeholder Engagement and Government Approval,
  • Project location and design,
  • Social Impact,
  • Environmental Impact,
  • Health and Safety, and
  • Governance, Transparency and Accountability

Jordan may play a role in setting these standards, but it is still in its early stages in comparison to the rest of the countries, so it will have to submit to one of the standards set by developed countries in this field.

Accordingly, in order to ensure that no investment is delayed in hydrogen production in Jordan, it is preferable that the policy and legislation which will govern this sector in Jordan be drafted in accordance with the already set standards, particularly from those countries to which Jordan will play a significant role in exporting hydrogen.
